Chapter 181-190
Chapter 181: A Fool’s Dream
“Brother Yantian, that was amazing!”
Seeing Yun Yantian return, Yun Yanshui couldn’t help but give him a thumbs up.
“Haha! It was nothing special,” Yun Yantian replied modestly.
“Brother Yantian, was that spear technique you used earlier part of the inheritance from the spear-wielding senior in the ancient temple?”
Yun Yanshuang asked curiously.
The Hundred Battles Spear Art that Yun Yantian had displayed earlier had left her awestruck. She couldn’t help but wonder if the force behind that strike rivaled the full power of a cultivator in the Qi Refinement stage.
“Indeed, it was,” Yun Yantian said with a nod and a smile.
“This time, all eyes—whether from the spiritual roots or the elders of the clans—are fixed on you and our Yun Cang Yun clan,” Yun Yunyang said from the side with a sigh, his tone tinged with bitterness.
He understood that while Yun Yantian’s victory had earned the Yun Cang Yun clan fame and prestige, it also meant that they had drawn the attention of countless cultivation families.
The aftermath would inevitably bring hidden schemes and targeted actions against them. The path forward for their family was bound to become increasingly perilous.
“As long as Shuang’er and I cultivate diligently, and as Wenxuan, Wenyu, Wenrun, and Wenlong grow stronger, we’ll eventually be able to protect the Yun clan.
Those who dare plot against us in the shadows will think twice before making any move.
Moreover, His Majesty and the royal family need the Yun Cang Yun clan. They won’t stand idly by and allow others to target us without reason.
And don’t forget, Master is still watching over us,” Yun Yantian said, attempting to ease his uncle’s concerns.
“What you say is true. No family’s growth comes without challenges. Facing obstacles on the road ahead is inevitable,” Yun Yunyang said, nodding in agreement. His nephew’s words had lifted a burden from his heart.
If the Yun Cang Yun clan could not avoid these struggles, then they would face them head-on.
The inevitable conflicts with other clans were simply arriving earlier than expected.
As the uncle and nephew exchanged words, the duels on the platform continued, one match after another.
“It’s my turn!”
Holding her number nine lot, Yun Yanshuang stood up with a smile. Like a swallow, she flitted gracefully onto the platform.
“Another spiritual root from the Yun Cang Yun clan? That young woman must be Yun Yanshuang, their strongest spiritual root!”
“Indeed.”
“I’ve heard Yun Yanshuang is exceptionally gifted in swordsmanship, having comprehended sword intent. She even defeated Wang Lijiao of the Wang family with ease in the Yun clan’s marketplace.”
“Is that true? Wang Lijiao wasn’t exactly weak.”
“It’s true.”
“Incredible. The Yun Cang Yun clan now has two spiritual roots with such terrifying talent and strength.”
“This time, though, her opponent is Wen Ruli of the Qishan Wen clan. His cultivation is at the Eighth Stage of Embryo Breath, and he’s known for his mastery of blade techniques. The Wen clan’s Overlord Blade is famously ferocious!”
“I wonder who will win?”
“It should be the Wen clan. While the Yun clan is a rising star and developing rapidly, they lack the foundation of an established power like the Qishan Wen clan, which is one of the Seven Clans.”
“Well, let’s watch and see.”
“I, Wen Ruli, do not bully women. I’ll let you strike three times first. If you can injure me, I’ll concede this duel,” Wen Ruli declared, gripping his spiritual blade tightly as he gazed at Yun Yanshuang with disdain.
He had never heard of the Yun Cang Yun clan and didn’t know how powerful this so-called strongest spiritual root might be.
But frankly, he didn’t care.
The Yun clan was just a newly ascended family, far inferior to the Wen clan. The idea that they could challenge him was laughable.
Even though Yun Yantian had displayed formidable talent and strength earlier, Wen Ruli didn’t find him particularly impressive. Compared to his own siblings and cousins, Yun Yantian was still lacking.
Did the Yun clan think they could rise rapidly with just two spiritual roots and the royal family’s support, hoping to challenge the established powers of the Seven Clans?
Ridiculous!
“In that case, I hope you’ll be careful!”
Though Wen Ruli’s tone was condescending, Yun Yanshuang remained calm. Unsheathing her Azure Frost Sword, she released her sword intent.
A powerful surge of sword energy swept across the platform like a biting wind, chilling the air.
With one swing of her sword, a pale crescent of sword energy, several meters long, shot toward Wen Ruli with lethal precision.
The sword energy tore through the air with razor-sharp precision, its speed so overwhelming that Wen Ruli’s expression darkened. He attempted to evade, but it was already too late.
The blade struck him directly, sending him flying off his feet.
His chest armor tore apart, and if not for the protective spiritual soft armor beneath his robes, he would have suffered grievous injuries.
Climbing to his feet in disarray, Wen Ruli looked down at his torn garment. His face contorted with fury and embarrassment.
He had underestimated her!
This Yun Yanshuang, it seemed, was at the peak of the Eighth Stage of Embryo Breath. The sword intent embedded in that strike was so powerful that even a cultivator at the Ninth Stage would struggle to withstand or avoid it.
“Well fought!”
Having struck Wen Ruli down with a single blow, Yun Yanshuang sheathed her sword and turned to leave the platform.
“Stop right there! The fight isn’t over yet!”
“Didn’t you say earlier that if I injured you within three moves, you’d admit defeat?” Yun Yanshuang asked, glancing back at Wen Ruli.
“You merely knocked me down; I’m not injured,” Wen Ruli spat, his face ashen with humiliation.
How could he, Wen Ruli, a spiritual root of the prestigious Qishan Wen clan, lose so easily to a mere spiritual root from the obscure Yun Cang Yun clan?
With so many eyes watching, admitting defeat would be utterly disgraceful.
“Ruli, stand down.”
From the Wen clan’s section, an elder spoke sharply, his tone leaving no room for argument.
“But, Third Uncle…”
“You are no match for her. That strike just now—she held back. Don’t delude yourself into thinking your spiritual armor can withstand her sword intent,” the elder said sternly.
Wen Ruli hesitated and glanced down at his armor. To his horror, he noticed a crack forming on the surface of the spiritual soft armor. The crack was slowly spreading.
Impossible!
How could this be?
This armor was designed to withstand the full-strength attack of a peak Ninth Stage cultivator. Yet, it had been compromised by a single, casual strike from Yun Yanshuang.
“She held back?” he muttered in disbelief. “Damn it! How could I lose to a woman? And one from a small, insignificant family!”
Overwhelmed by rage, Wen Ruli abandoned his earlier declaration of conceding after three moves.
Spiritual energy surged within him as he unleashed a ferocious slash with his blade.
The domineering blade energy roared like a thunderclap, bearing down on Yun Yanshuang with the force of a raging storm. Wen Ruli was determined to defeat her and reclaim his dignity.
The blade energy streaked through the air and struck where Yun Yanshuang stood—only to hit a fading afterimage.
By the time Wen Ruli extended his spiritual sense to locate her real position, a cold blade was pressed against his neck.
Behind him, Yun Yanshuang’s calm but chilling voice rang out: “Will you concede now?”
Wen Ruli froze. With her sword at his throat, he dared not move a muscle. His face turned alternating shades of red and white.
He had lost.
To a spiritual root from the Yun Cang Yun clan.
“I… I concede,” he muttered through gritted teeth, valuing his life over his pride.
Yun Yanshuang withdrew her sword and left the platform with the same grace with which she had arrived, returning to sit beside her brother.
“The Yun clan’s younger generation is truly exceptional!”
“Indeed! For such a small and newly established cultivation family to produce two spiritual roots of such caliber in just a few years is astounding.
They’ve now defeated spiritual roots from the Seven Clans with ease, back to back. Unbelievable!”
The arena buzzed with admiration and chatter.
First Yun Yantian, and now Yun Yanshuang.
The siblings’ extraordinary performances had left an indelible impression on everyone present, firmly etching the Yun Cang Yun clan’s name into the minds of the spectators.
It was clear to all that if the Yun clan’s rise continued unchecked, they were destined to become a major power.
“Haha! Magnificent! Truly magnificent! Who would have thought that Lady Yanshuang had comprehended sword intent!”
On the Dragon Throne, Bai Li Xi laughed heartily, praising Yun Yanshuang’s performance once again.
Meanwhile, the expression on the Eastern Palace Empress’s face grew increasingly grim.
Conflicted emotions churned within her as she wrestled with her thoughts.
*The stronger the younger generation of the Yun Cang Yun clan becomes, the higher their future potential. With His Majesty favoring them and secretly supporting their rise, they’re bound to become a major cultivation family one day.
If Xue’er marries into the Yun clan, she won’t suffer. This family’s ascension is only a matter of time.*
*No! What does their potential matter? The ancestor has already decided that Xue’er will marry into the Yulin Wang clan. Compared to the Yun clan, the Wang clan is far superior.
Even if the Yun clan shows promise, they’re still unworthy of marrying my daughter.
Besides, Yun Yantian will eventually be eliminated by the ancestor. The Yun clan’s rise is doomed to fail.
For Xue’er’s future and the sake of our family, she cannot marry into the Yun clan!*
Chapter 182: Giving Up
“Third Uncle, you must kill Yun Yanshuang!”
Wen Ruli returned to his clan, his expression still brimming with resentment as he addressed his third uncle.
“With the Yun clan’s two spiritual roots displaying such talent, they are bound to rise sooner or later,” he added, his tone filled with frustration.
“Is this the extent of your perspective? If so, I am deeply disappointed,” the middle-aged man said sternly, gazing at the furious Wen Ruli.
“Third Uncle, what do you mean by that?”
“Our true opponents, the ones that truly concern the Qishan Wen clan, have always been the other three major families and the six clans—not some obscure Yun clan.
If you can’t let go of your personal grudge over being defeated by Yun Yanshuang, how can the family entrust you with important matters in the future?”
His tone was sharp, and his words cut deep. Wen Ruli froze, a sudden clarity washed over him.
He was right.
The true adversaries of the Qishan Wen clan were the other three families and six clans, each boasting numerous talented disciples and profound foundations. For years, the Wen clan had expended all its resources and energy to maintain its standing among them.
How could he, out of personal frustration, drag the clan into unnecessary conflicts with the Yun Cang Yun clan and risk adding another powerful rival to their list of enemies?
Instead of creating an enemy, it was better to forge alliances.
The Yun clan had shown great potential. No doubt, there were families among the three major families and six clans already considering forming alliances with the Yun clan rather than antagonizing them. It would be foolish to give the Yun clan reason to regard the Wen clan as a threat.
As this realization dawned on him, Wen Ruli noticed that several clan elders had already gone to engage with Yun Yunyang, fostering connections. Even the heads of the three major families and elders from the six clans were making efforts to acquaint themselves with the Yun clan.
“I apologize, Third Uncle. I was too short-sighted,” Wen Ruli said, bowing deeply.
“It’s good that you’ve calmed down and reflected. The family’s investment in you won’t go to waste,” his uncle replied with a faint nod.
“Come with me later to the Yun clan’s side and formally apologize. After all, your conduct during the duel was rather unbecoming,” the elder instructed.
“I will remember your words, Third Uncle,” Wen Ruli replied earnestly.
“Brother Yunyang, I am Wen Shuihan,” Wen Shuihan greeted, bowing politely to Yun Yunyang as he approached Wen Ruli.
“Brother Shuihan, no need for such formality,” Yun Yunyang said, hastily returning the gesture.
He recognized Wen Shuihan as an elder of the Qishan Wen clan and a seasoned cultivator.
“My nephew’s temperament was overly impulsive during the duel and nearly caused harm to Yanshuang. Please forgive him,” Wen Shuihan said directly, getting to the point.
Beside him, Wen Ruli turned to Yun Yanshuang and bowed deeply. “Lady Yanshuang, I was reckless earlier. I hope you can overlook my offense.”
“It’s fine. I wasn’t hurt, though I did damage one of your spiritual artifacts,” Yun Yanshuang replied graciously.
“The artifact is of no consequence. As long as I have your forgiveness, the loss of another artifact is nothing,” Wen Ruli said with a warm smile.
Seeing the two juniors put their differences aside, Wen Shuihan exchanged a few polite words with Yun Yunyang before leaving with Wen Ruli.
“The three major families and seven clans are not ones to act recklessly,” Yun Yunyang mused aloud.
He thought of how the elders of these families, along with their spiritual roots, had approached him and his family with courteous attitudes during the assembly.
“They’re the most dangerous kind of opponent—appearing amicable on the surface while calculating schemes in their hearts,” Yun Yanshui remarked with a wry smile.
“Haha! Yanshui, you have a keen understanding of human nature,” Yun Yunyang laughed.
“But no matter what they’re plotting, as long as they maintain the facade of civility, it’s still to our advantage.
The real headache would be dealing with someone irrational enough to stop at nothing to destroy our Yun clan,” Yun Yunyang added, shaking his head.
“I doubt the Tongshan Xia clan will let this go. Once the Hundred Clans Assembly ends, I fear they’ll make a move against us in secret,” Yun Yantian said, his expression grim.
“His Majesty is likely aware of this. After the assembly, I suspect he’ll arrange for someone to escort us back in secret,” Yun Yunyang replied.
The Xia clan was the only one among the three major families and seven clans with a direct conflict of interest with the Yun clan.
They opposed Bai Li Moxue marrying Yun Yantian. Having failed to achieve their goals during the assembly, it was inevitable that they would act covertly in the future.
That said, His Majesty was a shrewd man and would not sit idly by while the Tongshan Xia clan schemed in secret.
Yun Yunyang found some solace in this. After all, the Yun Cang Yun clan and the royal family, under His Majesty’s leadership, were currently bound together in mutual interests.
Meanwhile, on the platform, the duels had concluded for the round.
Yun Yantian and Yun Yanshuang both advanced to the second round with ease. Neither sibling had to expend much effort, as their opponents from the other families chose to forfeit rather than face them.
The strength displayed by Yun Yantian and Yun Yanshuang was simply too overwhelming, far exceeding their peers.
Of particular note was Yun Yanshuang’s match against Lu Shanglin. Aware that he was no match for her, Lu Shanglin decisively forfeited.
“My next opponent is Ye Xiaolin,” Yun Yantian said, his gaze sweeping toward Ye Xiaolin in the distance.
Sensing his stare, Ye Xiaolin returned it with a faint smile.
“My opponent is the other Ye family spiritual root, Ye Xiaomo,” Yun Yanshuang replied, glancing at the figure beside Ye Xiaolin.
“That Ye Xiaomo isn’t weak. Like Ye Xiaolin, he’s also reached the Ninth Stage of Embryo Breath. You must be cautious,” Yun Yantian said with a serious tone.
“Don’t worry, Brother Yantian,” Yun Yanshuang said with a gentle smile.
“The semifinals are next. The first match will be between Yun Yantian of the Yun Cang Yun clan and Ye Xiaolin of the Canglan Ye clan,” Li Qing announced from the platform after the previous rounds of fierce competition.
Seeing the two spiritual roots from the Yun Cang Yun clan reach the semifinals brought a sense of satisfaction to Li Qing. It was a testament to both his and His Majesty’s judgment.
The rise of the Yun Cang Yun clan would undoubtedly become a significant asset to the royal family in the future.
“Immortal Li, I forfeit,” Ye Xiaolin said, rising to his feet with a polite bow before Yun Yantian could even take the stage.
“What? Ye Xiaolin forfeited?”
“It can’t be helped. Yun Yantian’s reputation has grown too strong. From start to finish, he hasn’t even shown his full power.
Especially during his match against Xia Changqing, the sheer might of his spear technique was terrifying—comparable to the strike of a Qi Refinement cultivator.
Though Ye Xiaolin is at the Ninth Stage of Embryo Breath and possesses many secret techniques granted by his family, even he can’t guarantee victory against Yun Yantian.
If he were to face him head-on and end up heavily injured, it could even damage his foundation. If I were in his position, I’d choose to avoid the fight too.”
The crowd buzzed with speculation and discussion at Ye Xiaolin’s unexpected forfeit.
“Brother Xiaolin, I appreciate your courtesy,” Yun Yantian said, clasping his hands in Ye Xiaolin’s direction.
“Brother Yantian, your skills are remarkable. I know I’m no match. Let’s meet privately sometime to discuss cultivation,” Ye Xiaolin replied with a smile.
“I’d be delighted.”
“Since Ye Xiaolin has forfeited, Yun Yantian advances to the finals,” Li Qing declared.
“Next, the second match: Yun Yanshuang of the Yun Cang Yun clan versus Ye Xiaomo of the Canglan Ye clan.”
“Immortal Li, I also forfeit,” Ye Xiaomo said, standing and bowing respectfully.
The crowd was stunned once again.
“With both matches ending in forfeits, the finals will be a match between Yun Yantian and Yun Yanshuang!” Li Qing said with a wry smile.
“Immortal Li, I forfeit,” Yun Yanshuang announced as soon as she took the stage.
Li Qing’s eye twitched at her words.
Could you be any more obvious about wanting your brother to win? At least step onto the platform and go through the motions!
However, since Yun Yanshuang had publicly conceded, Li Qing had no choice but to accept it.
“The winner of this duel tournament is Yun Yantian of the Yun Cang Yun clan!” Li Qing announced loudly, composing himself.
Applause erupted from the various families and spiritual roots.
Yun Yantian’s strength was indisputable. Among the younger generation, there were few who could rival him. His extraordinary spear techniques had left a lasting impression on everyone.
His victory was one that many acknowledged wholeheartedly.
“Haha! Fascinating! Absolutely fascinating!”
From his throne, Bai Li Xi laughed heartily. Seeing Yun Yantian dominate the tournament with ease filled him with delight.
Beside him, however, the Empress of the Eastern Palace wore a darker, more complex expression.
Chapter 183 The Underworld
“This year’s Hundred Clans Assembly has truly been an eye-opener for me,” Bai Li Xi declared, his voice carrying across the assembly.
“Especially the Yun Cang Yun clan. The performances of their two spiritual roots have left me in awe.
Of course, the other clans’ spiritual roots have also done admirably, and I am deeply gratified by what I’ve seen today.
I firmly believe that the future belongs to you young people. The stability of Yue Kingdom will one day rest on your shoulders,” he continued.
As the Hundred Clans Assembly drew to a close, Bai Li Xi delivered his remarks, singling out the Yun Cang Yun clan for particular praise while also acknowledging the contributions of all the participants.
“Now, I invite the members of the Yun Cang Yun clan to accompany me to Wanlong Hall. There, I will bestow the rewards for this year’s winners.
As for the rest of you, please remain here. I have arranged for an abundance of spiritual fruits and wine to show my hospitality,” Bai Li Xi announced.
“Let’s go, to Wanlong Hall to meet His Majesty,” Yun Yunyang said, rising and leading his three nieces and nephews toward the grand hall.
He was eager to discover what rewards His Majesty had prepared for the victors.
Back in the Rear Mountain of Wanlong
“Who would have thought the Yun Cang Yun clan would emerge as a dark horse this year?” Bai Li Qingsun remarked, his face filled with both surprise and satisfaction as the assembly concluded with the Yun clan’s victory.
“It was indeed unexpected,” the Ye clan patriarch agreed.
“In the future, it seems we’ll have another rival among us,” said the Xia clan elder, gripping her dragon-headed cane. Her words were deliberate, a veiled suggestion to the other clans and families to take heed of the Yun Cang Yun clan’s rise.
She implied that it might be prudent for them to unite temporarily to suppress the Yun clan before it became too powerful, sparing her Tongshan Xia clan the trouble of acting alone.
However, her words were met with silence.
The experienced elders from the other families were not so easily swayed. They understood the Xia clan elder’s intent clearly. To act rashly against the Yun clan at her urging would be foolish, especially when each of their own clans had unresolved issues to manage.
“Brother Wang, the Yun Cang Yun clan’s territory isn’t far from your Yulin Wang clan. Aren’t you concerned that one day their growth might threaten your position?”
Unable to rouse the others, the Xia clan elder turned her attention to Wang Qingshan, who sat calmly beside her. Her tone was light, but her words carried a sharp edge.
“My Wang clan doesn’t have the capacity to worry about such things for now, especially since we have no major conflicts or grievances with the Yun clan,” Wang Qingshan replied, his tone measured.
“No conflicts? I’ve heard that ever since your Wang clan’s marketplace was destroyed, the Yun Cang Yun clan established their own cultivation marketplace right under your noses.
That marketplace is thriving, drawing in countless rogue cultivators who might otherwise have gone to your market.
Can you truly tolerate this?
And don’t forget, His Majesty seems intent on marrying Xue’er into the Yun clan. Surely you understand the implications of such a union?
If the Yun Cang Yun clan flourishes under your watch, will you be able to remain as composed as you are now?”
The Xia clan elder pressed further, her words attempting to ignite Wang Qingshan’s ire and spur him to act against the Yun clan.
“There’s no need to persuade me further, old sister. You’re well aware of the Yulin Wang clan’s current predicament. We’ve been busy dealing with pressure from the three major families and defending against the covetous eyes of other clans.
We simply don’t have the resources to confront a minor family like the Yun Cang Yun clan,” Wang Qingshan replied with a sigh, his tone carrying a trace of bitterness.
Hearing this, the Xia clan elder recalled the difficulties the Wang clan had faced in recent years, being suppressed by the three major families.
She assumed Wang Qingshan’s reluctance to act against the Yun clan stemmed from being preoccupied with more pressing concerns.
What she didn’t realize was that Wang Qingshan wasn’t unwilling—he simply didn’t dare.
“Very well. If Brother Wang has his reasons, then my Tongshan Xia clan will handle the matter.
Once the Yun Cang Yun clan is dealt with, we can form a marriage alliance between our two clans,” she proposed.
“That sounds ideal. If your Xia clan is willing to take the lead, my Wang clan will be deeply grateful,” Wang Qingshan replied with a smile.
In truth, he was hoping the Xia clan would recklessly move against the Yun Cang Yun clan.
If they succeeded in weakening the Yun clan, it would save the Wang clan future trouble.
And if they failed and provoked the Yun clan’s mysterious backer into action, the Wang clan would simply sit back and enjoy the show.
“As long as you remember this favor, Brother Wang. I hope our clans can grow closer and stand united against others,” the Xia clan elder said.
“Certainly! Certainly!” Wang Qingshan replied earnestly.
“Senior Bai Li, now that the assembly has concluded, I will take my leave. There are many matters awaiting my attention back at the clan,” the Ye clan patriarch said, rising and bowing politely to Bai Li Qingsun in the pavilion.
Initially, the Ye clan patriarch had believed that Bai Li Qingsun’s invitation carried hidden intentions to harm them.
For days, he had been on edge, constantly vigilant for any schemes from Bai Li Qingsun that might target him or the others.
Now, with the Hundred Clans Assembly concluding smoothly and Bai Li Qingsun making no overt moves, the Ye clan patriarch couldn’t help but feel a flicker of doubt.
Could he have been overthinking things? Was Bai Li Qingsun’s invitation simply to observe the assembly and reminisce with old acquaintances?
“Senior, we too must take our leave. Once we are free, we’ll be sure to visit again and catch up,” said the patriarchs of the Lin clan, Lu clan, and other clans, rising and bowing politely to Bai Li Qingsun in turn.
Wang Qingshan and the Xia clan elder also prepared to leave.
Wang Qingshan, eager to avoid any potential traps, sought to depart quickly.
The Xia clan elder, on the other hand, was eager to return and mobilize her family’s cultivators to deal with the Yun Cang Yun clan—especially Yun Yantian, who she believed must die.
“Old friends, it is rare for us to meet every ten years. Won’t you stay a while longer and chat with this old man?”
Bai Li Qingsun sipped his tea calmly, his gaze settling on the patriarchs of the three major families and seven clans. A faint, warm smile adorned his lips.
“Senior, our clans are burdened with many matters. Let’s reconvene another day, shall we?”
“I’m afraid you won’t be leaving today,” Bai Li Qingsun said, his voice steady, yet carrying an undeniable weight.
“Senior Bai Li, what do you mean by this?”
The Lou clan patriarch frowned deeply, a sense of unease rising within him.
“A barrier!”
The Ye clan patriarch, Lin clan patriarch, Lu clan patriarch, and Wang Qingshan—each a Foundation Establishment cultivator with keen senses—suddenly realized they were trapped within a powerful formation.
“Bai Li Qingsun, so you truly harbored malicious intent in inviting us here!”
The Lu clan patriarch’s face darkened as he glared at Bai Li Qingsun, his eyes gleaming with icy killing intent.
“Stay here with me. At least then I’ll have company on the road to the afterlife. With old friends by my side, the journey won’t be lonely,” Bai Li Qingsun said with a light chuckle.
“Do you think this barrier alone can trap us?”
The Lu clan patriarch’s voice was cold as his spiritual core activated. Vast spiritual energy erupted from his body, surging toward the barrier etched with intricate, mysterious runes.
This strike, unleashed with all his might, was so powerful that even the other clan patriarchs felt a twinge of fear. It was a vivid reminder of the terrifying strength of a Foundation Establishment cultivator.
However, when the devastating attack struck the barrier, it vanished like a stone sinking into the sea, dissipating without a trace.
“Bai Li Qingsun, release us immediately!”
The Ye clan patriarch demanded, his expression grim as he locked eyes with Bai Li Qingsun.
“Do you truly believe you can hold off the ten of us alone?”
The Lin clan patriarch’s aura surged as he joined the confrontation, his tone icy.
The other clan patriarchs wore similarly dark expressions, their hostility evident.
From the moment Bai Li Qingsun had summoned them, they had suspected his motives. They hadn’t intended to come at first but ultimately decided to gather, fearing that refusing the invitation might prompt Bai Li Qingsun to target them individually.
By uniting, they believed they could counter anything Bai Li Qingsun might attempt.
“Senior Bai Li, we anticipated your intentions and came prepared. The ten of us are united and ready. You cannot hold us here.
If you release us now, we pledge to continue supporting the royal family after your passing.
However, if all ten of us perish here today, the three major families and seven clans we command will immediately rebel against the royal family.
I’m certain you wouldn’t want His Majesty’s empire to face such a catastrophic backlash, would you?”
Unlike the other patriarchs, who responded with anger, Wang Qingshan maintained his composure.
Stepping forward, he bowed deeply to Bai Li Qingsun, his tone calm yet firm as he attempted to reason with him.
“After all, any such action would be futile.”
Chapter 184 Strange Black Air
“Brother Qingshan, do you truly think the measures you’ve considered are beyond my preparation?”
Bai Li Qingsun took a calm sip of tea, his eyes fixed on Wang Qingshan as a cold smile crept across his face.
Wang Qingshan’s expression darkened immediately.
“Brother Qingshan, accompany me on this journey to the underworld. Of all the ten of you, I appreciate your temperament the most—steady and unpretentious,” Bai Li Qingsun said, his voice eerily composed.
“He’s a lunatic! The man’s completely mad!”
“If he wants us dead, we can’t let him have his way so easily. Everyone, attack together! If we combine our strength, we can kill him and shatter this barrier.
Once we escape, we’ll lead our families in rebellion against the royal family of Yue!”
“No more talking—strike now!”
The Ye clan patriarch roared, activating his spiritual core as he launched the first strike against Bai Li Qingsun.
The celestial platform within him expanded rapidly under his control, radiating a blazing light and exuding an aura of desolation and decay.
From the platform emerged the manifestation of Autumn in the Forest, a deathly force that surged toward Bai Li Qingsun, capable of rapidly draining the life force of anyone it touched.
This was one of the Ye patriarch’s most powerful divine abilities, an extension of his celestial platform.
“According to our agreement, I’ve brought you the feast. Now, it’s your turn to act,” Bai Li Qingsun muttered, showing no sign of concern as he sat unmoving in the pavilion.
From his sleeve, tendrils of black mist surged forth, writhing like living shadows.
The mist engulfed Autumn in the Forest in an instant, consuming the deadly attack completely.
“What… what is this?”
The Ye patriarch’s face twisted in shock as he watched his technique vanish into the black mist.
Before he could react further, the mist surged toward him with astonishing speed.
The Ye patriarch attempted to summon another divine ability to defend himself, but the black mist moved too swiftly. It enveloped him entirely, binding his body in a suffocating grip.
As the mist tightened its hold, the light of his celestial platform dimmed, and its divine power faded.
Stripped of his spiritual strength, the Ye patriarch stood helplessly, his eyes wide with terror and despair as the black mist began to devour him bit by bit.
“Heh heh… the taste of a Foundation Establishment cultivator is a bit lacking, but it’s decent enough,” a voice cackled.
The black mist coalesced, transforming into a figure clad in a black robe. The man’s face radiated an aura of malice and wickedness.
He strode to Bai Li Qingsun’s side, sitting down casually and flashing a sinister smile.
“I trust you’re satisfied,” the black-robed man said.
Bai Li Qingsun’s expression remained impassive, as though he had anticipated this.
“There are still nine more,” he replied calmly.
“Three at the Foundation Establishment stage and six at the peak of Qi Refinement… not ideal, but they’ll suffice for now,” the black-robed man said, his eyes gleaming with malevolence as he surveyed the remaining nine patriarchs.
The sight of the black-robed man’s gaze sent a chill through the group. The memory of the Ye patriarch’s effortless demise was still fresh, and they felt a growing sense of dread.
“Bai Li Qingsun, must you truly go to such extremes?”
The Lin clan patriarch’s voice trembled as he spoke, his fear evident.
He had believed that among Yue Kingdom’s cultivators, only Bai Li Qingsun, the Ye patriarch, the Lu patriarch, and Wang Qingshan could match him.
Yet this black-robed figure was far more terrifying than any of them had anticipated.
“Not eating the rest of them?” Bai Li Qingsun asked, ignoring the Lin patriarch’s protests as he looked at the black-robed man.
“I’ve only had one Foundation Establishment cultivator so far. My stomach’s feeling a bit full. Let me empty it first,” the man replied with a twisted grin.
Suddenly, his chest split open, revealing a grotesque maw. From the bloodied cavity emerged the Ye patriarch’s lifeless corpse, covered in sticky black ichor.
Thud!
The corpse fell to the ground before the black-robed man, the stench of decay permeating the air.
Wang Qingshan and the others stared in horror, unable to tear their eyes away.
“Attack together!”
The black mist began to shift again, surging toward the group. The nine patriarchs acted quickly, unleashing their most powerful divine abilities in unison in a desperate attempt to repel the black mist.
Yet, like before, their techniques were rendered useless. The mist consumed everything it touched, leaving the patriarchs powerless to stop its advance.
Not only did the black mist consume their attacks, but it seemed to grow even stronger as it did so.
“Bai Li Qingsun, even in death, I won’t let you get away with this!”
The Lu patriarch, now entangled by the black mist, struggled fiercely. His face twisted with fury as he roared at the calm and composed Bai Li Qingsun.
Gradually, his voice faded into silence as the black mist engulfed him completely. Like the Ye patriarch before him, only a cold corpse remained—coated in viscous slime and blood, his face frozen in terror and despair.
“Senior Bai Li, spare me! My Lou clan swears eternal loyalty to the royal family and harbors no rebellious intent!”
The black mist turned its sights on the Lou patriarch next, wrapping around him as he screamed and begged for mercy. But Bai Li Qingsun remained unmoved, watching impassively.
“Is there truly no way out?”
The Xia clan elder, witnessing the fates of the Ye, Lu, and Lou patriarchs, felt a deep chill of despair. Her aged face was pale with fear.
For as long as she had ruled her family, she had always controlled the lives and deaths of others. Never had she experienced such utter helplessness and dread.
And she wasn’t alone. Wang Qingshan, the Lin patriarch, and the others were equally consumed by terror.
What is this black mist?
They had thrown every divine technique, every ounce of power at it, and none of it had worked. Even the might of their celestial platforms had failed to leave the slightest mark on the mist.
“Stop struggling. This entity is not of the human realm. No techniques or divine abilities from this world can harm it,” Bai Li Qingsun said coldly as he watched Wang Qingshan and the others continue their futile resistance.
“Senior Bai Li, is there truly no room for negotiation?”
Wang Qingshan looked at Bai Li Qingsun, his expression grim. He had struggled so hard to reach the Foundation Establishment stage. How could he accept becoming mere sustenance for this monstrous mist?
“Brother Qingshan, give up,” Bai Li Qingsun replied with a sigh.
Even as they spoke, the black mist had ensnared the Lin patriarch. In desperation, the Lin patriarch detonated his celestial platform, but even this suicidal move failed to harm the mist.
Seeing this, Wang Qingshan’s hope crumbled completely. He ceased his resistance, realizing that the black mist was indeed not of this world, just as Bai Li Qingsun had claimed.
What kind of monster did Bai Li Qingsun summon?
“Brother Wang, save me! Save me!”
The Xia clan elder’s voice rang out, trembling with fear as the black mist engulfed her.
“Senior, I know I’m about to die. But before I go, can you tell me where you found this creature? Let me die with some understanding,” Wang Qingshan asked, forcing himself to suppress the fear gnawing at his heart.
“Wanlong Mountain,” Bai Li Qingsun replied succinctly.
“So, the royal family sealed Wanlong Mountain all these years to trap this thing?”
“That’s part of it. As I’ve said, it isn’t of this world. No techniques or divine abilities here can affect it.”
“Then why does it obey you? How did you come to control it?”
“If you’ve had this creature all along, why not use it to wipe out the three major families and seven clans outright? Why resort to such methods?”
“The details are unnecessary to share. Brother Qingshan, it’s time for you to go. I’ll join you on the Yellow Springs Road shortly.”
Bai Li Qingsun poured himself another cup of tea, raised it in a gesture of farewell to Wang Qingshan, and then slowly poured it onto the ground.
In the distance, Wang Qingshan let out a bitter laugh as the black mist engulfed him.
Soon, another corpse, coated in foul-smelling slime and blood, fell to the ground with a sickening thud.
“Heh heh heh… as promised, I’ve killed all ten of them. Now, it’s time for you to fulfill your end of the deal,” the black mist coalesced once more, forming the sinister figure of the black-robed man.
“Our agreement still holds. I’ve dissolved the contract. Devour me, and you’ll be free,” Bai Li Qingsun said.
“Heh heh heh… in that case, I won’t hold back!”
The black mist cackled wickedly and surged toward Bai Li Qingsun, enveloping him completely.
A gruesome chewing sound echoed, and moments later, Bai Li Qingsun’s lifeless body fell to the ground.
“Finally… finally, I’m free! Without a host or restrictions, who can stop me now? Heh heh heh!”
The black mist laughed maniacally, its voice filled with unrestrained glee as it loomed over Bai Li Qingsun’s corpse.
But in the next moment, a fragment of a shattered mirror slipped from Bai Li Qingsun’s robes, catching the black mist’s attention.
Before it could react, the mirror shard emitted a blinding beam of light that enveloped the mist. Slowly, inexorably, the light began to pull the mist into the mirror, no matter how violently it struggled.
“Damn it! Damn it! Bai Li Qingsun, you traitor! You liar! You broke your promise!”
The black mist screamed in fury, but its resistance was futile. It was drawn into the mirror piece, which glowed briefly before falling silent.
Chapter 185 Grief of All Races
“This is your reward for winning the competition,” Bai Li Xi said, handing a storage ring to Yun Yantian as he led the four members of the Yun Cang Yun clan into the hall.
“Inside, you’ll find several manuals for Yellow-Grade techniques ranging from fifth to seventh rank. In addition, there are high-level guides on spiritual planting, artifact forging, pill refining, and formation arts.
You’ll also find an assortment of spirit stones, spiritual seeds, and other resources,” Bai Li Xi added with a smile.
“Thank you for your generosity, Your Majesty,” Yun Yantian said, bowing deeply.
“Must you still call me ‘Your Majesty’?” Bai Li Xi asked, raising an eyebrow.
“Father,” Yun Yantian corrected himself.
“Haha! That’s more like it. ‘Father’ has a better ring to it. Once the Hundred Clans Assembly concludes, I’ll have someone secretly escort you back to the Yun Cang Yun clan.
Xue’er will accompany you, and you can handle the wedding arrangements as you see fit.
When I have some free time, I’ll personally visit to offer my blessings,” Bai Li Xi said, patting Yun Yantian on the shoulder with the warmth of a proud elder.
“I will follow your instructions, Father,” Yun Yantian replied, bowing again.
“Your Majesty, there’s trouble!”
“What is it?” Bai Li Xi asked, his expression sharpening.
“It’s the patriarch… the patriarch has…”
“That’s enough. I already know,” Bai Li Xi interrupted with a sigh, waving off the royal guard who had come to report.
He was well aware of his ancestor’s plan.
Though he hadn’t agreed with it, his ancestor had been adamant, insisting that it was for the good of the royal family. Bai Li Xi had been powerless to dissuade him.
“Brother Yunyang, come with me to send off the patriarch one last time,” Bai Li Xi said solemnly as he rose from his seat, motioning for Yun Yunyang and the others to follow.
At the Rear of Wanlong Mountain
By the time Bai Li Xi and the group arrived, the rear mountain was already crowded with spiritual roots and elders from various families.
Among them, the members of the three major families and seven clans were mourning their fallen patriarchs. The sight of their ancestors’ lifeless bodies filled the air with grief and fury.
“Who did this? Who killed them?!”
The Ye family elders clung to their patriarch’s corpse, their bloodshot eyes burning with rage.
Beside them, Ye Xiaolin, Ye Xiaomo, and the other spiritual roots of the Ye family stood pale-faced, fists clenched tightly as they stared at the body with red-rimmed eyes.
“Patriarch! Patriarch!”
The Wang family, led by Wang Liyuan, were similarly consumed by grief as they mourned their patriarch’s tragic death.
“Damn it! What happened here?!”
From the Tongshan Xia clan, Xia Changqing’s voice trembled with rage as he beheld the lifeless body of his ancestor.
“This must be the work of the royal family! It has to be!” Lu Shanglin roared, his face contorted with anguish as he knelt beside the Lu patriarch’s corpse.
“Even the royal family’s patriarch, Bai Li Qingsun, is dead, and in the same gruesome manner. It’s unlikely to be their doing,” another elder from the Lu clan said, trying to maintain some rationality despite his own heartbreak.
“If not the royal family, then who?
Who has the power to kill five Foundation Establishment cultivators and six peak Qi Refinement cultivators in one fell swoop?”
The Lu clan elder’s voice carried the disbelief and confusion that echoed through all the gathered clans.
The royal patriarch Bai Li Qingsun, alongside the most powerful elders of the three major families and seven clans, represented the pinnacle of cultivation in Yue Kingdom.
Who—or what—could have slaughtered all eleven of them so silently and completely?
As the families struggled with their grief and unanswered questions, Bai Li Xi arrived with his entourage.
The sight of his ancestor’s corpse left Bai Li Xi momentarily stunned. Though he had anticipated this outcome, seeing Bai Li Qingsun’s lifeless body in such a wretched state nearly caused him to faint.
“Your Majesty, take care of yourself!”
Li Qing quickly stepped forward to steady Bai Li Xi.
“I’m… fine,” Bai Li Xi said, taking a moment to compose himself before signaling Li Qing to step back.
The grief and shock on Bai Li Xi’s face were evident to all, including the members of the three major families and seven clans.
Many of them, who had suspected the royal family of orchestrating the massacre, began to reconsider their assumptions.
“Your Majesty, you must deliver justice for us!”
“Indeed! Our patriarchs cannot die like this, without cause or explanation!”
The elders of the Chuan Yin Lu clan and Tongshan Xia clan approached Bai Li Xi, their faces filled with sorrow and indignation as they demanded answers.
The elders and spiritual roots of the other families turned their gazes toward Bai Li Xi, their eyes pleading for him to seek justice for their fallen ancestors.
“How do you expect me to deliver justice for you?” Bai Li Xi asked, looking back at the three major families and seven clans.
“The one who could silently kill not only our royal ancestor but also your family patriarchs must possess unimaginable power.
Do you truly believe I am capable of avenging them?”
His words struck a heavy chord, plunging the crowd into silence.
Indeed, the realization was chilling.
The eleven strongest cultivators in Yue Kingdom had been slain without a sound. Even the royal family’s patriarch, Bai Li Qingsun—once regarded as Yue Kingdom’s most powerful cultivator—was among the dead.
How could anyone, even their revered emperor, hope to bring justice against such a foe?
“Li Qing,” Bai Li Xi called softly, his voice filled with an underlying sadness.
“Yes, Your Majesty,” Li Qing responded, stepping forward.
Bai Li Xi knelt beside Bai Li Qingsun’s lifeless form, gently closing his ancestor’s eyes before subtly retrieving the fragment of the shattered mirror from his robes.
“Arrange for the proper burial of the patriarch,” Bai Li Xi ordered.
“As you command,” Li Qing replied. Soon, royal guards stepped forward to carry away Bai Li Qingsun’s body.
“Everyone,” Bai Li Xi said, turning to address the grieving families and elders, his expression somber. “This is as far as I can go.
The only thing I can do now is to secretly investigate the truth.
I will find out who had the audacity to murder our royal patriarch and the elders of your families,” he promised, his voice filled with determination despite the tears glistening in his eyes.
The gathered clans remained silent, their sorrow palpable.
They knew the emperor spoke the truth. Nothing more could be done at this moment.
All that remained was to return home, bury their fallen, and quietly seek the truth.
Yet, deep down, many knew that the truth might remain forever out of reach.
And even if it were uncovered, how could they possibly contend with an entity powerful enough to silently annihilate five Foundation Establishment cultivators and six peak Qi Refinement cultivators?
This force was far beyond anything they could handle, even with the combined might of Yue Kingdom.
The families left quietly, carrying their fallen elders.
“Investigate! We must find the truth!”
Wang Liyuan clenched his fists tightly, his eyes blazing with hatred as he stared at Wang Qingshan’s lifeless body.
“Our patriarch cannot die like this, without answers. I swear, no matter how powerful the enemy, I will avenge him when I am strong enough!”
“Father, should we investigate the patriarch’s death?” Lu Shanglin asked, his face still pale with grief as he turned to Lu Zhengqiang.
“And what if we do? The one who killed these eleven must be far beyond the level of Foundation Establishment.
Our Lu family might never be able to exact revenge in this lifetime,” Lu Zhengqiang replied, his voice heavy with resignation.
“Does that mean we let our patriarch die in vain?”
“We can only hope that, in the future, someone from our family will rise to power. Until then, revenge is nothing more than a pipe dream,” Lu Zhengqiang said with a sigh, his despair evident.
“What did our patriarchs provoke to warrant such a massacre?” Ye Xiaomo asked, staring at the lifeless form of the Ye patriarch, his face a mix of sorrow and confusion.
“We may never know. The truth might forever elude us,” Ye Xiaolin replied with a heavy sigh.
“Do you think the royal family was behind this?”
“The royal patriarch was killed as well, and Bai Li Qingsun alone couldn’t have wiped out the patriarchs of the three major families and seven clans silently.
I doubt it was the royal family’s doing,” Ye Xiaolin reasoned.
“Still, if we ever find out who did this, the Ye family will ensure they pay dearly. Even if the culprit is a being far above the Foundation Establishment stage, this grudge will never be forgotten!”
“Uncle, the patriarch is dead. What about the Yun Cang Yun clan?”
Xia Changqing asked his uncle, his tone cautious.
“I’ll take our patriarch’s body back for burial. You will lead a team to deal with the Yun Cang Yun clan. Eliminating Yun Yantian was the patriarch’s last wish—it must be fulfilled,” Xia Changqing’s uncle said decisively.
“I understand.”
“Be careful. The royal family might secretly protect the Yun Cang Yun clan on their journey home. Do not let them catch wind of your actions.
With our patriarch gone, the Tongshan Xia clan can no longer afford to provoke the royal family. If the emperor discovers our involvement and finds evidence, we will face severe retribution!”
“Don’t worry, Uncle. I’ll handle it discreetly,” Xia Changqing assured him.
Chapter 186 That’s it
“Your Majesty, please accept our condolences.”
Once the three major families and seven clans had left with their patriarchs’ bodies, only Bai Li Xi, Li Qing, and the four members of the Yun Cang Yun clan remained in the rear mountains.
Yun Yunyang stepped forward and bowed respectfully.
“It’s fine. I already knew of my ancestor’s plan,” Bai Li Xi said, waving a hand dismissively as he walked into the pavilion and sat down.
Inside the pavilion, the tea remained warm, but the person who had brewed it was gone.
For a moment, Bai Li Xi sighed inwardly. His ancestor had sacrificed far too much for the sake of the royal family.
“Have a seat, all of you. No need to stand,” Bai Li Xi said, smiling faintly.
“Thank you, Your Majesty.”
Yun Yunyang, his three juniors, and Li Qing expressed their gratitude before sitting down.
“You didn’t seem surprised when I mentioned what had just transpired. Why is that?”
Lifting the still-warm cup of tea from the stone table, Bai Li Xi poured each of them a fresh serving.
“Back in the hall, when the royal guards reported the patriarch’s death, Your Majesty’s expression revealed that you were already aware of the matter,” Yun Yunyang replied, recalling the emperor’s composed demeanor when the news of Bai Li Qingsun’s death had been delivered.
“Haha! Observant as ever, Yunyang. You never fail to impress me,” Bai Li Xi said, chuckling.
“Your Majesty flatters me,” Yun Yunyang replied quickly, bowing his head.
He was acutely aware that the deeper intricacies of the situation were beyond his understanding.
After all, serving a ruler was like treading a tiger’s den—one misstep could be fatal.
Though Bai Li Xi treated the Yun Cang Yun clan well, stepping on the emperor’s toes, even accidentally, could lead to disaster.
“No harm done! No harm done!” Bai Li Xi waved his hand dismissively, a slight smile playing on his lips.
“It doesn’t hurt to share the details with you. It’s no great secret.”
With that, Bai Li Xi retrieved a fragment of a shattered bronze mirror.
At the sight of the shard, Yun Yanshui and Yun Yanshuang both froze, their pupils constricting instinctively.
It’s… the fragment of the ancient bronze mirror!
“What is this, Your Majesty?” Yun Yunyang asked, his tone tinged with curiosity as he looked at the shard.
“I’m not entirely sure what it is either,” Bai Li Xi admitted. “All I know is that my ancestor found it during a trial in Wanlong Mountain when he was young.
According to him, the mirror contains a sealed creature—not of this world—immensely powerful.
My ancestor and the patriarchs of the three major families and seven clans were all killed by this creature,” Bai Li Xi said, his tone heavy as he gazed at the fragment, lost in thought.
Hiss!
Yun Yunyang and Li Qing gasped audibly. Even Yun Yanshui and Yun Yanshuang, who already knew the artifact’s nature, couldn’t help but shudder.
A creature from the ancient bronze mirror, not of this world?
“If this creature was so powerful, how did Senior Bai Li manage to control it?” Yun Yunyang asked after a moment’s hesitation.
“My ancestor forged a blood pact with the mirror fragment, binding the creature to his will.
The creature was compelled to obey him, but only so long as he lived. Upon his death, the creature would be set free.”
“So that’s how it was,” Yun Yunyang murmured, nodding in understanding.
“All these years, my ancestor’s efforts to suppress the creature severely hindered his cultivation progress. His lifespan dwindled year after year.
Meanwhile, the three major families and seven clans grew ever stronger, harboring ambitions of their own.
Fearing that his death would leave no one to suppress them, and that the royal family’s reign would fall into chaos, my ancestor devised this plan.
Under the guise of the Hundred Clans Assembly, he invited the patriarchs to a meeting, using the mirror creature to eliminate all eleven of them in one fell swoop.
This served two purposes:
First, his own death would quell any suspicions the families might have about the royal family.
Second, by removing the patriarchs, the three major families and seven clans would suffer devastating losses, forcing them to temper their ambitions.”
Bai Li Xi’s voice was calm as he explained, but the weight of his ancestor’s cunning plan was not lost on his audience.
Yun Yunyang couldn’t help but feel a sense of awe. Bai Li Qingsun’s strategy was as brilliant as it was ruthless.
Had Bai Li Xi not shared the truth, Yun Yunyang would never have guessed how the events had unfolded or who was responsible for the patriarchs’ deaths.
“Now that Senior Bai Li is gone, hasn’t the mirror creature gained its freedom?
If it goes on a rampage, who could possibly stop it?”
Even as he marveled at Bai Li Qingsun’s plan, Yun Yunyang couldn’t suppress the chilling thought of the creature’s potential havoc.
A being capable of effortlessly killing Bai Li Qingsun and the patriarchs of the three major families and seven clans…
If unleashed, such a creature could plunge the world into chaos.
“Don’t worry,” Bai Li Xi said with a faint smile. “The mirror creature has already been dealt with.”
Bai Li Xi gazed at the fragment of the mirror in his hand and spoke slowly.
“It’s over.”
“Why is that?” Yun Yunyang asked, puzzled.
“For years, my ancestor fought against the creature sealed in this mirror, fully aware of its power. If it were ever to be released, it would plunge the world into chaos.
That’s why he remained secluded in the palace, tirelessly seeking a way to neutralize it.
Shortly before the Hundred Clans Assembly, he found the answer. That discovery led him to devise the plan to use the creature to eliminate himself and the patriarchs of the three major families and seven clans.”
“What method did Senior Bai Li use?” Yun Yunyang asked.
“I don’t know,” Bai Li Xi admitted with a shake of his head.
Hearing this, Yun Yunyang and Li Qing nodded in realization, their hearts filled with newfound respect for Bai Li Qingsun.
Such a figure, blessed with extraordinary talent and unrivaled cunning, had sacrificed everything for the royal family. If not for being entangled with the mirror creature, he might have reached far greater heights, and the royal family might never have faced the constant pressure from the three major families and seven clans.
“I’ve told you all this because I trust you,” Bai Li Xi said, his gaze steady.
“With the patriarchs of the three major families and seven clans gone, the royal family will no longer face overwhelming pressure.
For your Yun Cang Yun clan, this is also an excellent opportunity. You can use this chance to grow steadily and surpass the other families, becoming a strong pillar of support for the royal family.”
“I’m concerned that the three major families and seven clans will still suspect the royal family,” Yun Yunyang remarked cautiously.
“There’s no need to worry,” Bai Li Xi replied confidently. “Even if they harbor suspicions, they lack evidence and cannot uncover the truth.
And even if they did know the truth, what could they do? With their patriarchs gone, they no longer have the strength to pressure the royal family. They don’t have the courage to act recklessly now.”
Bai Li Xi’s smile was composed and self-assured.
The meticulous planning of Bai Li Qingsun had anticipated every outcome. He had considered all potential repercussions and acted accordingly.
“Your Majesty speaks the truth. Senior Bai Li’s plans are truly worthy of admiration,” Yun Yunyang said earnestly. The more he learned about the royal ancestor, the more he felt his own insignificance in the grand scheme of things.
“With the obstacles cleared by my ancestor, I must now turn my attention to other matters,” Bai Li Xi said, standing and pocketing the mirror fragment.
“Li Qing.”
“Your Majesty.”
“Escort Yun Yunyang and his group back to their clan in secret. I suspect the Tongshan Xia clan may attempt an ambush.”
“As you command, Your Majesty,” Li Qing replied.
“Brother Yunyang, until we meet again,” Bai Li Xi said, nodding politely before leaving under the escort of royal guards.
Watching Bai Li Xi depart, Yun Yunyang and his group felt a mix of respect and apprehension.
Later, in a side hall, Yun Yantian approached Bai Li Xue, who still appeared pale from her injuries. His expression softened with concern.
“Are you feeling better?” he asked gently.
“I’m much better now,” she replied with a faint smile.
“Father has decreed that you will return to the Yun clan with me. Are you willing?” Yun Yantian asked, wrapping her in a protective embrace.
“Yes,” Bai Li Xue whispered, her cheeks tinged with a faint blush.
Standing nearby, Yun Yunyang and Li Qing exchanged knowing smiles.
Just as the group was preparing to leave with Bai Li Xue, the Empress Dowager of the Eastern Palace stormed in with an escort of Imperial Guards. Her expression was fierce, and behind her stood three cultivators from the Tongshan Xia clan, each at the eighth level of the Qi Refinement stage.
Her sharp eyes landed on Yun Yantian, who was still holding Bai Li Xue, and a chilling fury flickered in her gaze.
“No one is taking my daughter from this palace!” she declared icily.
“Your Grace, the marriage between the Seventh Princess and Yun Yantian is by the Emperor’s decree,” Li Qing said, stepping forward and bowing respectfully.
“You dare invoke the Emperor against me?” the Empress Dowager snapped, her eyes narrowing dangerously.
“I wouldn’t dare. I merely wish to remind Your Grace of the Emperor’s will,” Li Qing replied calmly, his tone neither servile nor overbearing.
The Empress Dowager’s face turned a dark shade of red with anger. She clenched her fists, but with the Emperor’s authority hanging over her, she dared not act rashly.
The news of her family patriarch’s death, along with the demise of the other clan leaders, had already reached her.
With the three major families and seven clans now significantly weakened, the Tongshan Xia clan no longer had the leverage to challenge the royal family directly.
If she defied the Emperor’s order, she risked becoming the next victim of his wrath—just like the Empress of the Northern Palace.
“Xue’er,” the Empress Dowager said, turning her focus to Bai Li Xue. “If you marry this man, you will no longer be my daughter. Think carefully about your decision!”
“Mother,” Bai Li Xue said softly, meeting her mother’s gaze with quiet determination. “I will marry him and no other.”
“Fine! From this day forth, we are no longer mother and daughter!”
With those parting words, the Empress stormed out of the hall, her fury and frustration evident in every step.
Chapter 187 Too Extreme
“I’m sorry. Because of me, you’ve had to sever ties with your mother.”
Inside the carriage, Yun Yantian carefully tended to Bai Li Xue, whose injuries had yet to fully heal. His face was etched with guilt.
Earlier, in the side hall, the heated argument between Bai Li Xue and the Eastern Palace Empress had played out before his eyes. He could only imagine how distressed Xue must feel.
“It doesn’t matter,” Bai Li Xue replied, shaking her head gently. Her pale face carried a trace of melancholy.
“For years, my relationship with my mother has been strained. To her, I’ve always been just a bargaining chip—a tool to secure the best possible benefits for herself.
She’s never cared about my feelings or my happiness. All that matters to her is leveraging me to strengthen her family’s position and secure her influence in the palace.”
Her tone was calm, but her words revealed years of bottled-up resentment.
Reflecting on her relationship with her mother, Bai Li Xue realized that there had been little warmth between them. Cutting ties might not be such a bad thing after all.
“Don’t worry,” Yun Yantian said firmly. “Once you’re at my Yun family estate, I’ll take care of you for the rest of my life. I won’t let you suffer any grievances, and neither will my family.”
Hearing how Bai Li Xue had been treated—reduced to nothing more than a tool for exploitation—Yun Yantian felt a pang of sorrow. He could only imagine how difficult her life in the palace must have been.
Bai Li Xue’s cheeks flushed a faint pink at his words, a sweet warmth spreading in her heart.
“Kill Cousin Xue?”
Hiding in the shadows with ten cultivators loyal to his family, Xia Changqing frowned upon hearing the report from one of his subordinates.
“Yes, word just came from the Eastern Palace Empress.”
“Why?”
Xia Changqing couldn’t understand. Bai Li Xue was his aunt’s biological daughter. Why would she resort to such a cruel act?
“The Empress doesn’t want the Seventh Princess marrying into the Yun family. She fears that such a marriage would elevate Yun Cang Yun to royal status, allowing the Emperor to secretly support their rise.
Rather than risk the Yun family becoming a future threat to the Xia clan, she’s decided to kill both Yun Yantian and Bai Li Xue, turning them into a pair of tragic lovers and disrupting the Emperor’s plans.”
“But the patriarch’s dying wish was to kill Yun Yantian, not Cousin Xue.
We were supposed to kill Yun Yantian and then marry Cousin Xue into the Yu Lin Wang clan, securing an alliance to elevate them to royal status.
Doesn’t this go against the patriarch’s wishes?” Xia Changqing’s frown deepened.
While he understood that his aunt’s actions were aimed at securing the family’s future, her extreme approach troubled him, especially since it contradicted the patriarch’s final directive.
“The Empress stated that even if Yun Yantian were killed, the Seventh Princess’s bond with him is too strong.
She might choose to remain loyal to him, even living as a widow in his memory.
Thus, she sees no value in keeping her alive. Killing both of them is the only way to ensure stability.
As for an alliance with the Wang clan, the Empress has other plans to achieve that goal.”
The middle-aged cultivator who had delivered the message spoke with grave seriousness.
Xia Changqing fell silent for a long moment, lost in thought.
Finally, he sighed and said, “So be it. If this is what my aunt has decided, we’ll follow her wishes.”
“Yes, sir.”
“Master Changqing, I have news.”
“What is it? Is the Emperor sending anyone to escort Yun Yunyang and the others back to their clan?”
“Yes.”
“How many?”
“Only Li Qing.”
“Li Qing…” Xia Changqing’s expression hardened.
Li Qing’s cultivation was at the peak of the Qi Refinement Third Stage, not an opponent to be underestimated.
“We’ll need to lure Li Qing away before we make our move.”
“Leave it to me, Master Changqing,” the subordinate assured.
“Good. Once Li Qing is out of the way, the rest of you will strike immediately. Kill Yun Yantian and Bai Li Xue—no, just Bai Li Xue. Afterward, retreat without delay.”
“Yes, sir.”
Xia Changqing decisively issued his orders, and the accompanying cultivators disappeared into the shadows.
Seated at the front of the carriage, Yun Yunyang and Li Qing continued their quiet conversation.
“This time, after returning to the palace, the Emperor is likely to take action against the Three Families and Seven Clans who have infiltrated the court, right?” Yun Yunyang asked thoughtfully.
“Exactly,” Li Qing replied with a faint smile, holding the reins lightly.
“With the patriarchs of the Three Families and Seven Clans now gone, they no longer pose a significant threat to the Emperor or the royal family.
In the past, the Emperor had to exercise caution in dealing with those they had planted within the court. But now, the situation is entirely different.”
“Let us hope everything goes smoothly for His Majesty,” Yun Yunyang remarked with a nod.
“His Majesty won’t miss such an opportunity. This is a rare chance to suppress the Three Families and Seven Clans and consolidate royal authority.
He has been preparing for this moment for far too long and has exercised immense patience.”
“With the fall of their patriarchs, the Yulin Wang Clan’s aspirations to become the fourth great family of Yue Kingdom…”
“Are nothing but pipe dreams now,” Li Qing interrupted, smiling knowingly.
“Not only will the Yulin Wang Clan fail to ascend, but the Canglan Ye, Wangyue Lin, and Chuanyin Lu Clans will also lose their titles as the top three families. They’ll be demoted to the ranks of the Ten Clans, greatly curtailing their future development.
His Majesty mentioned earlier that the fall of these patriarchs benefits not only the royal family but also your Yun Cang Yun Clan and other cultivation families across the kingdom.
Many families who have long suffered under the oppression of the Three Families and Seven Clans will see this as an opportunity to quietly develop and grow stronger.”
Yun Yunyang, however, remained cautious. “Even so, a starved camel is still bigger than a horse. While losing their patriarchs is a severe blow, the Three Families and Seven Clans still have deep foundations.
For other cultivation families to rise above them easily will remain a challenge.”
“That depends on whether the leaders of these families can seize this rare opportunity,” Li Qing said with a faint smile.
“If they fail to act now to strengthen their families, they will remain oppressed forever, with no hope of surpassing the Three Families and Seven Clans.”
“You’re right, Li Immortal Master. Your wisdom is appreciated,” Yun Yunyang responded respectfully.
Li Qing glanced at him and smiled faintly, silently hoping that the Yun Cang Yun Clan could rise to prominence one day—preferably within his lifetime.
His heart grew heavy as he considered his own limited lifespan. Stuck at the peak of the Qi Refinement Third Stage, unable to break through, his days were numbered.
Suddenly, a series of deafening roars echoed from the mountains flanking the road.
Beastly auras surged like a storm, their oppressive presence washing over them.
Moments later, the ground trembled violently.
Massive trees toppled one after another, kicking up clouds of dust as chaos erupted from the dense forests.
“What’s going on?” Yun Yunyang, being a mortal, was perplexed by the sudden shaking earth and falling trees.
“The roars are too terrifying to be from ordinary mountain beasts,” he added nervously.
“It’s a beast tide!” Li Qing exclaimed, his expression serious.
“A beast tide?” Yun Yunyang asked, bewildered.
“The forests on both sides of the road are teeming with monsters, and they’re charging straight at us,” Li Qing explained grimly.
Pulling back the curtain of the carriage, Li Qing turned to warn Yun Yantian and the others.
“Get ready. This isn’t a coincidence; someone’s deliberately targeting us!”
Hearing the term “beast tide” from Li Qing, Yun Yantian and Yun Yanshuang quickly grasped the situation.
“Yantian,” Li Qing ordered, “take the reins and get your uncle and the princess to safety. I’ll hold them off.”
“Understood!” Yun Yantian immediately climbed to the driver’s seat, urging the carriage forward.
As he cracked the whip and the horses surged ahead, Li Qing leaped to the ground, drawing his sword with calm resolve.
The stampede of monsters thundered closer, their glowing eyes gleaming like malevolent stars in the shadows of the forest.
“I’ll handle them,” Li Qing murmured, his grip tightening on his blade as he prepared for the imminent clash.
Chapter 188 Valley Raid
“Shuang’er, Yan Shui, look after Mo Xue and Uncle.”
Yun Yantian gave a quick command before leaping out of the carriage. In one swift motion, he seized the reins and lashed the whip across the horses’ flanks.
The steeds neighed sharply, their cries piercing the air, before galloping forward with unmatched speed, pulling the carriage away from the chaos.
Meanwhile, Li Qing’s figure transformed into a streak of light, propelling him into the sky.
With a surge of spiritual energy coursing through him, an overwhelming aura radiated outward, crashing down like an unstoppable tide upon the mountain ridges below.
The beasts surging down from the mountains—mere low-tier demons at the Embryo Breath Realm—were instantly pinned to the ground under the sheer weight of his unleashed might. Many crumbled beneath the divine pressure, their forms exploding into clouds of blood mist, which dispersed into the surrounding forest.
In an instant, the scent of blood engulfed the mountains. Chunks of mangled flesh rained down across the woodland like grotesque confetti, turning the serene forest into a vision of hell.
Yet, despite Li Qing’s terrifying display, some of the beasts managed to evade his suppression. Their wild eyes locked onto the fleeing carriage, and with frenzied howls, they charged in pursuit.
“You think you can escape? Not so easily!”
High above, Li Qing observed the surviving beasts veering toward the carriage. His gaze turned icy as his sleeve flicked sharply. Razor-sharp currents of energy shot forth, streaking through the air like deadly blades.
Slash!
Thud!
The currents tore through the horde below, each one striking true like a rain of arrows. Heads burst like overripe fruit, spilling crimson and gray in equal measure.
One by one, the demon beasts crumbled, their monstrous forms collapsing lifelessly into the blood-soaked ground.
“So many beasts… Who could have summoned them?”
Li Qing descended slightly, his expression dark as he surveyed the carnage below. But before he could find answers, another wave of shadowy figures loomed from the ridge—a swarm of monstrous birds shrieking as they dove toward him.
“Courting death!”
Li Qing’s voice thundered as he unleashed a pulse of spiritual power. A shield of protective energy solidified around him, shimmering like an invisible fortress.
The diving birds collided with it headfirst, their skulls shattering on impact. Blood and brains splattered against the shimmering barrier, staining it a sinister red.
And yet, the horde did not relent. Driven by some maddening force, the beasts hurtled toward him, crashing into the barrier like a relentless tide.
One after another, their bodies broke and fell, lifeless forms plummeting to the forest below. The earth trembled under the impact of their corpses, crushing trees and stirring clouds of dust.
“While Li Qing is tied up with those beasts, move now!”
In the shadows, Xia Changqing observed the scene from a safe distance. Seeing Li Qing occupied, he issued a swift command.
The rogue cultivators under his lead vanished into the wilderness, racing toward the fleeing carriage.
“So, the Xia Clan of Tongshan has finally decided to make their move…”
Driving the carriage, Yun Yantian glanced back at the battle above. He saw Master Li entangled in the swarm of flying demons, unable to break free for the moment. A cold glint flickered in Yantian’s eyes.
Though he did not know who orchestrated the attack, his suspicions were clear.
“I thought the Xia Clan would focus on tending to their fallen patriarch’s remains after his death.
But it seems they are determined to see this through to the bitter end…”
“Don’t jump to conclusions without proof,” Yun Yunyang said, parting the carriage curtains to speak, his expression grim.
“Uncle, it must be them!” Yun Yanshuang retorted sharply.
“Enough. Yantian, get us to safety first. You and Shuang’er should assist Master Li. His safety is paramount.”
“Actually, if this really is the Xia Clan’s doing, we should be more concerned about Yantian than Master Li,” Bai Li Xue interjected.
Her calm yet chilling tone gave pause to everyone in the carriage.
“They’re likely targeting Yantian. Master Li is just a distraction.”
Yun Yunyang fell silent, his thoughts heavy with unspoken concerns.
“She’s right, Uncle.”
“In that case,” Yunyang finally said, his voice measured, “we must escape to a safe place as quickly as possible. Once we’re beyond their reach, the Xia Clan will have no choice but to retreat, and Master Li will be out of danger.”
Though his words were composed, deep down, Yun Yunyang harbored the same suspicions. The Xia Clan’s shadow loomed heavy over this ambush.
As Yun Yantian drove the carriage into a narrow mountain valley, a deafening rumble suddenly echoed from one side of the cliffs.
Without warning, massive boulders, each the size of a millstone, came tumbling down from above. They crashed onto the path ahead, blocking the road completely and trapping the carriage.
“Move!”
From the shadows of the valley, ten black-clad, masked cultivators emerged. Seeing their trap succeed, they tightened their grip on gleaming spirit weapons and descended toward the carriage like vultures.
Spiritual energy crackled as their weapons glowed ominously, sending arcs of deadly force hurtling toward Yun Yantian and his vehicle in a ferocious barrage.
“Shuang’er, protect Uncle and the others!”
Sensing the incoming assault, Yun Yantian grabbed his Cloud-Pattern Spear and launched himself into the air.
With a powerful sweep of his spear, he unleashed the first technique of the Hundred Battles Spear Art—Thousand Armies Charge.
A devastating wave of spear energy surged outward, like an unstoppable army tearing through enemy ranks. It clashed with the incoming barrage, neutralizing the combined attack of the ten assailants in an instant.
Pivoting off a protruding rock on the valley wall, Yun Yantian propelled himself even higher. His spear thrust forward with explosive force, piercing through the chest of the closest masked attacker. Blood spurted in all directions, splattering his face.
With a flick of his spear, he flung the lifeless body into the depths of the valley. The corpse landed with a sickening splat, reduced to nothing more than a mangled heap of flesh.
“This one’s spear technique is terrifying—on par with that of a Qi Refinement realm cultivator! Be cautious!”
The leader of the masked cultivators, his face shadowed but his tone grim, shouted a warning as he watched Yun Yantian charge forward. The young spear-wielder had already shattered their combined assault and slain one of their own with unsettling ease.
As a precaution, the leader drew several spirit talismans, activating them with a flick of his hand.
From the talismans, radiant shield lights materialized, forming an array of golden barriers. They descended like colossal bowls, aiming to trap Yun Yantian beneath their crushing weight.
“Shuang’er, go assist your brother Yantian!”
In the carriage, Yun Yunyang called out anxiously. Watching his nephew fight ten enemies alone, he feared the young man would be overwhelmed.
“But Uncle, you, Big Brother, and Sister Baili are still in the carriage!”
“I’ll protect us. Focus on aiding Yantian!”
Baili Moxue, her face pale and her hands trembling from her injuries, gripped her longsword tightly.
“Elder Sister Baili, your wounds haven’t healed yet. Be careful,” Yun Yanshuang said softly before stepping out of the carriage, her Qing Shuang Sword gleaming as she rushed to join the battle.
At that very moment, a deafening screech pierced the air.
A flock of ferocious demon birds descended from above, their sharp eyes locking onto the carriage below. With predatory cries, they dove straight down.
Baili Moxue, struggling against her injuries, tried to raise her sword, but her strength faltered. She could only watch in despair as one of the demon birds slashed through the carriage with its razor-sharp talons, overturning it completely.
Inside, Yun Yunyang, Yun Yan Shui, and Baili Xue were thrown to the ground, tumbling out of the shattered carriage in a chaotic heap.
Yun Yunyang narrowly avoided colliding with a large rock, saved at the last moment by a subtle burst of force from Yun Yan Shui.
Unbeknownst to the others, Yun Yan Shui had also shielded Baili Xue as they fell, ensuring she didn’t notice his intervention.
As the carriage tumbled perilously close to a deep pit at the edge of the valley, Yun Yan Shui acted quickly. Moving like a phantom, he carried both his uncle and Baili Xue to a hidden cave within the valley, out of sight of the attackers.
He had noticed this cave earlier, during a quick survey of the area, and now it served as the perfect hiding spot.
“Tongshan Xia Clan…”
After ensuring his uncle and Baili Xue were secure, Yun Yan Shui stood at the mouth of the cave. From his vantage point, he could see his sister and Yun Yantian locked in fierce combat with the masked attackers.
Demon beasts and birds were also swarming in from all sides, their numbers growing at an alarming rate. The overwhelming onslaught was putting the duo in a precarious situation.
“The beasts… Master Li was right. Their arrival isn’t natural. Someone is pulling the strings from the shadows.
If we don’t find and eliminate the one controlling them, these attacks will never end. No matter how many beasts we kill, it won’t be enough.”
Muttering to himself, Yun Yan Shui’s figure blurred and disappeared into the darkness like a wraith.
Chapter 189 Daoist Swears
“To think… a Qi Refinement cultivator could be this formidable!”
Hidden in the shadows, Xia Changqing stood alongside a black-robed rogue cultivator, their eyes fixed on Li Qing in the skies above.
The sight was nothing short of terrifying. Li Qing effortlessly slaughtered wave after wave of fierce demon birds, his strikes showing no signs of fatigue. Xia Changqing couldn’t help but feel a chill run down his spine.
“Those demon birds are only at the Embryo Breath Realm. Compared to the Qi Refinement stage, they’re vastly inferior. Even being able to stall Li Qing for this long is remarkable.”
“True. The gap between the Embryo Breath and Qi Refinement stages is as vast as heaven and earth,” Xia Changqing agreed with a slight nod.
Then, glancing at the black-robed cultivator beside him, he added with a tinge of curiosity, “I must admit, I didn’t expect you to know beast-taming techniques.”
The black-robed cultivator chuckled lightly. “It’s nothing special. My brother and I stumbled upon an incomplete beast-taming manual during our early travels through an ancient immortal estate. It’s flawed, hardly a masterpiece.”
Despite his calm demeanor, the rogue cultivator was cautious not to reveal too much. He feared Xia Changqing might covet their technique and eventually target him and his brother for it.
“Incomplete or not, it’s still remarkable. Even in its current state, it’s powerful enough for you two to control so many demon beasts with ease. If it were complete…” Xia Changqing trailed off, his tone tinged with wonder. “I imagine it would be a truly fearsome art.”
The rogue cultivator stiffened slightly, his wariness growing. He quickly deflected, “You flatter me, Young Master Changqing. Completing such a technique is easier said than done. My brother and I have tried countless times to fill in the gaps, but our efforts have been fruitless.
“Besides,” he continued with a feigned sigh, “this incomplete technique has severe drawbacks.”
“Drawbacks?” Xia Changqing raised an eyebrow in surprise.
“Yes. Every time we use it, it drains a tremendous amount of our vitality and spiritual energy.
“That’s why my brother and I have been stuck at the peak of the Embryo Breath Realm for years, unable to advance even a step further. Most likely, we’ll remain at this level for the rest of our lives,” the rogue cultivator said, his tone laced with false bitterness.
Hearing this, Xia Changqing nodded thoughtfully but remained skeptical of the rogue cultivator’s claims. “I see. Such a significant flaw indeed makes it a risky technique to practice.”
“Exactly. Were it not for the hardships of life as rogue cultivators, my brother and I would never have taken such a gamble,” the rogue cultivator replied, feigning another heavy sigh.
Whoosh!
The sound of something slicing through the air abruptly broke their conversation.
Both Xia Changqing and the rogue cultivator tensed, instinctively sensing the presence of someone behind them.
The rogue cultivator reacted instantly, spiritual energy surging as he prepared to strike.
But before he could move, a flash of cold light streaked through the air—swift and lethal.
In a heartbeat, the glimmering blade pierced through the rogue cultivator’s forehead.
His body froze, eyes wide with disbelief as he stared at the cold, expressionless face of the young figure before him.
A single thought echoed in his fading consciousness: Qi Refinement? That strike… was it sword intent?!
Beside him, Xia Changqing stood frozen in shock. Watching the rogue cultivator’s lifeless body crumple to the ground, his fear took hold.
The moment he snapped out of his daze and reached for a talisman to escape, the youth moved again.
With inhuman speed, the young man’s hand shot out, gripping Xia Changqing’s neck like an iron vice.
Xia Changqing’s breath hitched, his limbs growing limp as a strange force surged through his body. His dantian was instantly suppressed, rendering him unable to channel spiritual energy.
Terror and despair filled his pale face.
As sunlight filtered through the canopy above, Xia Changqing finally caught a clear look at the youth before him. His eyes widened in utter disbelief.
“Y-you… Yun Yanshui?! It’s you?! You’re… a cultivator?!”
The face was unmistakable.
He recognized the boy from the grand banquet at the Wanlong Hall. Back then, Yun Yanshui had seemed like an ordinary mortal, one who had embarrassed Xia Changqing by shamelessly clearing his table of spirit fruits and wine.
At the time, Xia Changqing, as a proud scion of the Tongshan Xia Clan, hadn’t even considered retaliating. Killing a mere mortal like Yun Yanshui would have felt beneath him.
But now…
This wasn’t the same carefree, ordinary boy he remembered.
This was a cultivator—a Qi Refinement cultivator.
And his strength was leagues beyond anything Xia Changqing had imagined.
Back at the Wanlong Hall, the figure he had once dismissed so carelessly now held his life in a firm, merciless grip.
“What’s wrong? Surprised?”
Yun Yanshui’s voice was icy, his gaze sharp with murderous intent.
“You… you were just a mere mortal! How could this be…”
Xia Changqing’s mind reeled. He had investigated Yun Yanshui before—an ordinary, rootless mortal with no spiritual potential. How could he have possibly become a cultivator?
But as the words left his mouth, a sudden realization dawned on him.
“So that’s it… That’s it! I never imagined your Yun family was hiding such an enormous secret! No wonder your clan has risen so rapidly in just a few short years. It must be some incredible fortune or celestial blessing!”
“A rootless cultivator… truly unbelievable!”
“Are you done talking?”
“Wait—spare me! I swear, I’ll ensure the Tongshan Xia Clan never troubles the Yun Cang Yun Clan again. I’ll even swear on my Dao heart to keep your secret safe!”
Sensing the cold killing intent in Yun Yanshui’s eyes, Xia Changqing’s heart raced with terror. He frantically pleaded for his life, desperation dripping from every word.
“A Dao heart oath?”
Yun Yanshui’s lips curled into a cold sneer.
“The only way to keep a secret… is to kill the one who knows it.”
“Yun Yanshui—don’t do anything rash! If you kill me, the Xia Clan will inevitably trace my death back to your Yun Cang Yun Clan. Do you really want to bring endless trouble upon your family? Will you throw caution to the wind and act so recklessly?”
“Let them come. If the Xia Clan dares to harm even one member of my Yun family, I’ll annihilate your entire clan,” Yun Yanshui replied coldly.
Without giving Xia Changqing another chance to speak, Yun Yanshui tightened his grip, snapping his neck with a chilling crack.
Casually tossing Xia Changqing’s lifeless body to the ground, he began rifling through his belongings. He quickly retrieved the storage pouches from both Xia Changqing and the black-robed rogue cultivator before summoning the Golden-Eyed Beast.
“Feast,” he commanded.
The beast eagerly devoured the two corpses—one at the Embryo Breath Ninth Stage and the other at the Embryo Breath Ninth Stage Peak. Such potent nourishment was a rare boon for a creature like the Golden-Eyed Beast, an opportunity that could not be wasted.
Once the beast had consumed its fill, Yun Yanshui dismissed it back into the storage pouch and disappeared into the forest without a sound.
He moved like a ghost, leaving no trace of his presence.
Elsewhere in the forest, a white-robed rogue cultivator, dressed like a scholar, suddenly paused. A sense of unease crept over him as his gaze swept toward the area where his brother and Xia Changqing had been hiding.
A faint foreboding tugged at the edge of his consciousness.
“Surely I’m overthinking this,” he murmured to himself. “Unless the Yun family is hiding a Qi Refinement cultivator, no one could possibly harm my brother.
“And as for Li Qing, he’s still occupied with the demon birds I’ve summoned. There’s no way he could break free and attack my brother.”
Reassuring himself, the white-robed scholar turned his attention back to controlling the beasts surrounding Li Qing.
He had no idea that Yun Yanshui had already slipped behind him, a gleaming dagger poised at his throat.
By the time the scholar sensed the danger, it was too late.
Slash!
The dagger sliced cleanly through his neck. Blood spurted into the air as the scholar’s eyes widened in shock and disbelief.
His body crumpled to the ground, twitching briefly before going still in a pool of crimson.
Yun Yanshui calmly summoned the Golden-Eyed Beast once more, allowing it to consume the body. He then collected the storage pouch hanging from the scholar’s waist and vanished into the shadows, leaving no trace behind.
High in the sky, Li Qing continued to battle the horde of demon birds and beasts swarming him.
Suddenly, a strange shift occurred. The beasts, as if awakening from a spell, began to realize the overwhelming pressure emanating from Li Qing.
One by one, they faltered, their primal instincts kicking in.
Fear replaced their aggression, and the beasts screeched in terror before scattering in all directions.
Watching this sudden retreat, Li Qing felt a flicker of confusion. There was no time to dwell on it, however. Without hesitation, he turned and sped toward Yun Yantian and the others.
He knew full well that the beasts had been sent to stall him, to prevent him from protecting the Yun family.
If the mastermind behind this scheme had gone to such lengths, it was likely that Yun Yantian and his group were already in danger.
Chapter 190 Leaving Someone Alive
“These siblings are truly difficult to handle!”
The leader of the masked rogue cultivators gritted his teeth as he watched Yun Yanshuang and Yun Yantian fight side by side, carving through his ranks with relentless precision.
Despite exhausting every tool and technique at their disposal, the attackers could barely hold the two at bay. Killing them outright? That seemed like an unattainable dream.
One wielded a spear with mastery so profound it rivaled a Qi Refinement cultivator in raw combat prowess.
The other had comprehended sword intent, her every strike unpredictable and devastating, leaving no opportunity for defense.
“This isn’t working! My talismans and spirit tools are nearly depleted! And those demon birds and beasts… they’ve all retreated for some reason. Could it be that Yuan Shusheng has fallen?”
“Should we retreat?”
“Retreat? Are you serious? The Tongshan Xia Clan promised us a hefty reward!”
“A reward we’ll never live to enjoy! These two are impossible to deal with. Killing Yun Yantian is a fool’s errand.”
The leader wasn’t the only one considering retreat. The rest of the masked cultivators were also wavering. They had been hired by the Xia Clan to kill for money, but they weren’t willing to throw away their lives.
People like them—mercenaries living on the edge—valued their lives above all else. They only fought when the odds were in their favor. But when the target proved too formidable and their own lives were at risk, continuing the fight was sheer stupidity.
“We can’t hold them off! We can’t kill Yun Yantian! Retreat!”
Weighing the risks, the leader decided that retreat was the wisest option. They could regroup and plan another way to deal with Yun Yantian later.
“You’re trying to run?”
Yun Yantian’s sharp eyes caught the movements of the retreating cultivators. With a cold glint in his gaze, he shattered their layered attacks and talisman suppressions with his Cloud-Pattern Spear. Then, with a burst of speed from the Treading Snow Without a Trace technique, he closed the distance in an instant.
“Do you think I’m afraid of you?!”
One of the rogue cultivators, seeing Yun Yantian charging toward him, roared in defiance. With a furious swing, his spirit-infused blade unleashed a massive arc of saber energy, its thunderous force slashing toward Yun Yantian with deadly intent.
“Piercing the Rainbow!”
Unfazed by the incoming attack, Yun Yantian countered with the third technique of the Hundred Battles Spear Art—Piercing the Rainbow.
With a sharp thrust, the spear’s energy surged forward like an unstoppable force. It cut through the saber energy effortlessly, splitting it apart as if it were nothing.
The residual force of the spear didn’t stop there. Like a bolt of lightning, it struck the rogue cultivator’s chest, piercing straight through his body. A gaping, bowl-sized hole was left in its wake, surrounded by shattered bones and torn flesh.
The rogue cultivator collapsed with a dull thud, blood pooling beneath him as his lifeless body fell still.
“These two siblings are relentless!”
The leader of the masked cultivators turned back and saw Yun Yanshuang and Yun Yantian pursuing them like wolves hunting prey. He could only watch in frustration as his comrades fell one after another to their combined assault.
What had begun with them as hunters stalking their quarry had completely reversed. Now, they were the hunted, scrambling for their lives.
And Yun Yantian—the so-called prey—was chasing them with the ferocity of a madman.
“A Thousand Shadows!”
Before the leader could think further, a sharp killing intent sent a chill down his spine.
Looking up, he saw Yun Yanshuang close in on him, her Qing Shuang Sword glowing faintly as dozens of sword lights materialized around her.
Under her command, the sword lights shot forward like a storm of blades, aiming directly at him and his nearby ally.
“Damn it!”
Panicking, the leader grabbed the closest rogue cultivator and shoved him forward as a human shield.
“Yellow Yang, you bastard!”
The unfortunate rogue cultivator screamed in rage as he was thrown into the path of the deadly onslaught.
Thud! Thud! Thud!
Dozens of sword lights pierced through his body, riddling it with holes. Blood gushed out in streams, and his lifeless corpse crumpled to the ground, his once-solid frame reduced to a broken, bloodied shell.
“You can only blame yourself for not being smart enough,” the leader muttered coldly, his eyes glinting with malice.
Without wasting another second, he activated a Swift Talisman, its golden light wrapping around him as he prepared to flee.
“Thousand Armies Charge!”
A sharp shout echoed through the valley as Yun Yantian’s attack arrived like a thunderstorm.
The terrifying spear aura surged forward, as if conjuring hundreds of divine and demonic phantoms that roared and charged with overwhelming force.
Caught off guard, Huang Yang could not evade in time. The devastating strike slammed into him, sending him flying like a ragdoll. Blood spewed from his mouth as his body crashed into a massive tree, snapping it in half.
Whoosh!
In a flash, Yun Yantian was upon him, Cloud-Pattern Spear poised to deliver the final blow. But just as the weapon was about to strike, a voice rang out from the heavens.
“Yantian, leave him alive!”
The sound of Li Qing’s voice snapped Yun Yantian out of his bloodlust. He hesitated, then withdrew his spear, standing tall as he awaited the elder’s arrival.
“Immortal Li, why spare him?” Yun Yanshuang asked as Li Qing descended gracefully from the sky. Her tone was puzzled, even slightly indignant.
“We leave him for the Emperor to handle. If we uncover evidence of the mastermind behind this, the Emperor will have grounds to act against the Tongshan Xia Clan,” Li Qing replied.
“You already know the Xia Clan is behind this. Why go to such lengths?”
“Evidence is always necessary, Yanshuang,” Li Qing said with a wry smile. “One must act with legitimacy.”
Yun Yanshuang nodded slowly, though her expression suggested she wasn’t entirely convinced.
“Go check on the Seventh Princess, your uncle, and the others. Leave this one to me,” Li Qing ordered, his voice calm but firm.
“Understood.”
The siblings nodded and departed swiftly, heading deeper into the valley to search for their family.
“Yantian, over here!”
Yun Yanshuang’s voice rang out as they reached the overturned carriage lying abandoned by the side of the road. They quickly searched the wreckage but found no sign of Yun Yanshui or the others.
Worry creased their faces as they extended their spiritual senses, scanning the area. Finally, they detected faint life signals in a concealed cave nearby.
Inside, they found Yun Yunyang and Baili Moxue, both unconscious.
“Uncle!”
Yun Yanshuang rushed to Yun Yunyang’s side, gently propping him up against the rocky wall of the cave. Slowly, he stirred awake, his expression dazed.
“Where… where am I?”
“Baili!”
On the other side of the cave, Yun Yantian cradled Baili Moxue in his arms. Seeing that she was merely unconscious and not seriously harmed, he let out a sigh of relief.
But his relief was short-lived. His eyes darted around anxiously.
“Where’s Yanshui?”
A trembling voice answered from outside the cave.
“W-wait! I’m here! So many beasts! It was terrifying!”
The siblings turned to see Yun Yanshui stumbling toward them, his clothes torn and filthy, his face pale and scratched.
“Yanshui, are you hurt?” Yun Yunyang and Yun Yantian rushed to check on him, concern etched on their faces.
“Haha, I got lucky,” Yun Yanshui said with a sheepish grin. “When the carriage flipped, I got thrown into a crack between some rocks. It was a tight spot, hidden from view, so those beasts didn’t find me.
“I thought I was done for, but it turned out to be my saving grace!”
“Good, as long as you’re safe,” Yun Yunyang said, finally exhaling a long breath of relief.
Only Yun Yanshuang had a knowing look in her eyes. She understood her brother far too well. He had likely dealt with the hidden manipulators behind the beast horde himself. Otherwise, there was no way the beasts would have scattered so suddenly during their earlier battle.
“What about Uncle and Sister Baili? Are they alright?” Yun Yanshui asked, his voice tinged with concern as he glanced at the cave’s interior.
“I’m fine,” Yun Yunyang replied. “I must have been thrown into this cave when the carriage flipped. My luck held out.”
“Baili’s injuries aren’t serious either. She’s still unconscious, but she’ll recover,” Yun Yantian added.
“Good, good. Looks like everyone made it out okay,” Yun Yanshui said with a broad smile, his tone lighthearted once again.
“Yanshui, stay here and watch over Sister Baili. I’m going to salvage the carriage and re-hitch the horses. We need to get back to the clan as soon as possible,” Yun Yantian said, clapping his brother on the shoulder before heading out of the cave.
“Your act was flawless, Yanshui,” Yun Yanshuang teased as she approached him. “Hiding in a crack, huh? Why not say you got stuck in a ravine instead?”
“Hey, if you’re going to fake something, you’ve got to commit! Do you know how much it hurt to rip up my favorite robe for this charade?” Yun Yanshui grinned.
“Don’t worry, Brother Yan Ying handles the family’s fabric trade. I’ll have him send you some new ones when we’re back,” Yun Yanshuang replied with a chuckle.
“So… did you pull off another big one this time?”
“Shh,” Yun Yanshui whispered, putting a finger to his lips. “We’ll talk about it when we’re home.”
