Chapter 257 No Choice
Yun Yanshuang froze in shock as she watched the Third Prince of the Wu Kingdom kill his own
two wandering cultivators. She couldn’t fathom why he would do such a thing.
Still, there was no time to dwell on it—her only focus was rescuing her two nieces.
With that thought, she surged forward, her figure a blur as she launched herself toward Yun
Yanshui. Her spirit sword gleamed, thrusting straight for his throat without hesitation.
Yun Yanshui quickly raised his hand, catching the blade effortlessly between two fingers. “Trying
to kill your own brother, little sister?”
“Brother? Bah! Who’s your sister?” Yun Yanshuang snapped, irritated by his teasing. Her Rising
Moonfall technique activated, aiming to disrupt the flow of spiritual energy within his body.
“Relax, Yanshuang! It’s me!”
Realizing the joke had gone too far, Yun Yanshui dropped his disguise, his appearance reverting
to his true form.
“Brother…?!”
Yun Yanshuang’s eyes widened in disbelief as she recognized the familiar face. It took her a
moment to recover before she angrily withdrew her sword and gave him a light kick. “You scared
me half to death!”
“Easy, easy! I know I was wrong!” Yun Yanshui pleaded, raising his hands in mock surrender.
“What are you doing here?”
After venting her frustration, Yun Yanshuang sat down, her tone still carrying a hint of
annoyance.
“I was worried about you and Wenyu and Wenrun, of course,” Yun Yanshui replied with a faint
smile.
“Come on, let’s go somewhere,” he said, standing up.
“Where?”
“To find that banner. With the Wu Kingdom elder and the Spirit Root cultivators locked in battle,
no one’s paying attention to us. It’s the perfect chance to help you secure it.”
“You’re as devious as ever,” Yun Yanshuang remarked, recalling the chaos on the battlefield.
She finally understood the situation. “You’ve schemed against the Wu Kingdom’s cultivators and
even their Spirit Root faction.”
“Well, Dong Zilong schemed against you, so I figured I’d return the favor. He wanted you all to
become food for his elder? Fine, let’s make the Wu Kingdom’s Spirit Root cultivators part of the
menu too,” Yun Yanshui said with a sly grin.
Unbeknownst to him, his plans aligned perfectly with Dong Zilong’s deeper schemes. But Yun
Yanshui remained blissfully unaware.
“By the way, do you even know where the banner is?”
After a brief pause, Yun Yanshuang eyed her brother curiously.
“Of course! I already extracted its location from Dong Zilong’s loyal retainer earlier,” Yun Yanshui
replied confidently.
“This journey has been dangerous enough. You can’t leave empty-handed after all you’ve been
through, can you?”
“True,” Yun Yanshuang nodded, recalling the perils they had faced. “To come out of this with
nothing would indeed be a waste.”
“Then let’s go. Once we’ve secured the banner, we’ll leave the mountain immediately,” Yun
Yanshui urged.
“But the Wu Kingdom hasn’t provided us an exit route. How do we get out?”
“Dong Zilong’s retainer is still around. We’ll make use of him,” Yun Yanshui said nonchalantly,
popping another disguising pill and transforming back into Dong Jian.
His confidence seemed to reassure Yun Yanshuang, and her eyes lit up with understanding.
“Wake Wenyu and Wenrun,” she instructed.
“Got it,” Yun Yanshuang replied obediently, kneeling down to rouse her nieces.
“G-Gugu?”
Yun Wenyu and Yun Wenrun blinked awake, their eyes foggy with confusion before locking onto
their aunt.
Then, as memories of their abduction returned, they bolted upright, gripping their spirit weapons
defensively. Their gazes scanned the area, finally landing on Dong Jian.
Their expressions darkened instantly, their spiritual energy surging in preparation for an attack.
“Wait!” Yun Yanshuang grabbed their arms. “Don’t attack. He’s far stronger than us. Just follow
my lead.”
“Follow me,” Yun Yanshui, still disguised as Dong Jian, said coldly before vanishing into the
dense forest.
“Why are we following him? Gugu, shouldn’t we take this chance to escape?” Yun Wenyu
frowned, confusion evident in her voice.
“There’s no time to explain,” Yun Yanshuang replied, her tone firm. “Just trust me—you’ll be
fine.”
Hearing Yun Yanshuang’s assurances, Yun Wenyu and Yun Wenrun exchanged a hesitant
glance before reluctantly nodding.
Though they didn’t trust the Third Prince, Dong Jian, they trusted their aunt, Yun Yanshuang.
With that, the three women followed closely behind Yun Yanshui, still disguised as Dong Jian, as
he led them deeper into the forest.
On the battlefield, Nangong Chun’s face was pale as she stared at the Wu Kingdom elder, her
heart racing.
“This… monster… can it truly not be killed?” she muttered, her voice trembling.
Despite their combined efforts and the myriad of techniques unleashed, they had failed to inflict
any significant damage on the elder. Instead, their own numbers continued to dwindle.
“It’s no wonder they were a Foundation Establishment cultivator,” Chu Ran said grimly, gripping
his spear tightly as he retreated to a safe distance. “Even as a failed ascendant, their power is
beyond our comprehension.”
His gaze fell on the elder, who was savagely devouring one of Chu Kingdom’s royal enforcers.
The enforcer, a Qi Refinement Stage Three cultivator, had been utterly powerless, his head
crushed in a single strike. His lifeless body lay crumpled on the ground, his expression frozen in
terror and despair.
“While we’ve lost many, I can feel it—its aura is weakening,” Beiyuan said coldly, his hand
tightening around his white-sheathed blade.
“You’re right,” Ye Xiaolin agreed. “Its movements aren’t as swift as they were at the start. As a
failed ascendant, its energy was likely unstable to begin with. After enduring our relentless
attacks, it can’t maintain its peak condition for long.”
“Keep pressing the attack!” Nangong Chun shouted. “Drain its strength! Once it’s completely
weakened, that’s when we’ll strike the killing blow!”
With her command, several Spirit Root cultivators from the Southern Kingdom launched another
wave of attacks, striking the elder’s back with a powerful blast that sent it staggering.
“Blood! Blood!”
The Wu Kingdom elder roared, its eyes wild with hunger as it lunged toward the Southern
Kingdom cultivators.
One of them, unable to dodge in time, was seized in its monstrous grip.
Under the weight of despair and terror, the cultivator was torn in half, his blood spraying into the
air in a gruesome display. The sight sent a wave of fear rippling through the ranks.
“We can’t win this… we can’t win!”
Some fell to their knees in despair, muttering incoherently. Others, overcome with fear,
contemplated fleeing the battlefield altogether.
“No one retreats! No one!”
Beiyuan’s voice rang out like a thunderclap. His fierce glare swept over the shaken cultivators
as he barked, “We’ve come this far—if we falter now, we’re all doomed! Stay together, or we’ll
be picked off one by one and devoured!”
A low growl echoed across the battlefield as the elder finished devouring its latest victim. In an
instant, it leaped toward Beiyuan, its claws outstretched.
Beiyuan braced himself, his heart pounding with a mix of fear and determination. But just before
the elder reached him, a black-robed figure appeared—a hidden enforcer of the Northern
Kingdom.
With a decisive strike, the enforcer slammed into the elder, forcing it to stagger back several
steps. Without hesitation, he grabbed Beiyuan and pulled him to safety.
“Now! Attack!”
Chu Ran’s shout cut through the chaos. The Spirit Root cultivators and their hidden protectors
seized the opportunity, unleashing a barrage of attacks on the elder. Techniques, talismans, and
spiritual weapons filled the air in a relentless assault. Explosions erupted one after another,
waves of heat and force surging across the battlefield.
“Fifth Prince, are you alright?”
The black-robed enforcer, a Qi Refinement Stage Six cultivator, stood before Beiyuan, his
expression calm.
“I’m fine, thanks to you, Master Mu,” Beiyuan replied, his voice filled with gratitude.
“It’s my duty,” Master Mu said with a nod.
“Fifth Prince, this place is too dangerous. We should find a way to leave.”
“And go where? The Tianqing Mountain is sealed by the Wu Kingdom. Right now, our only
chance of survival is to work together and defeat that monster.
“If I retreat, so will everyone else. Once that happens, it’ll be impossible to regroup. We’ll be
picked off one by one and turned into its food.”
Beiyuan’s voice trembled with frustration and resolve. “I’m not saying this out of concern for
others—I’m saying it for myself. If I want to live, I have no choice but to stand and fight!”
Master Mu sighed heavily, his expression somber. “I understand.”
